Smokefree England one year on
On 1 July 2007, England
made history by bringing in the smokefree
legislation. This legislation requires all indoor public places
and
workplaces to be completely smokefree.
So how have we in the
East of England done? One year on, 97% of people in the East are
still aware of the legislation. It still has the support of 74%
of the population, which is similar level of support in June 2007.
Most of all, 70% think that creating smokefree public places has
had a positive effect on the health of people in the East.

Next step in tobacco control
The people of the East
of England are being given a once in a lifetime opportunity to help
make smoking history for the children of the region - thanks to
a Government consultation on a new national tobacco strategy.
The consultation runs
till 8 September 2008. The four main consultation themes are:
- protecting children
and young people from smoking;
- further reducing
smoking rates and health inequalities caused by
smoking;
- helping smokers to
quit; and
- helping those who
cannot quit.
